Barberton was founded in 1891 by industrialist O.C. Barber, the 'Match King' who moved his Diamond Match Company's manufacturing from Akron to the new planned town in 1894, and the city grew so quickly around its factories and immigrant workforce that it earned the nickname 'the Magic City.'
